Best Place to Celebrate Onam in Kochi

Best Place to Celebrate Onam in Kochi
Every year, Kerala prepares for a homecoming. The story is one every Malayali carries from childhood: Mahabali, the beloved king under whose rule the land knew its golden age, returns once a year to visit his people. And Kerala, in turn, dresses up for him; pookalams bloom at doorsteps, the sadhya fills every home with its aroma, and for ten days, the entire state becomes one large, joyous welcome.
That is the heart of Onam. Not just a festival, but a celebration of togetherness, abundance and everything that makes Kerala, Kerala. And this year, Wonderla Kochi becomes part of that welcome.
A park dressed for Maveli
Walk in any day between August 22 and 30, and you'll see it before you hear it: the Flying Mahabali installation soaring over the park; our own tribute to the king's annual visit, watching over the season's festivities all through. The decor, the mood, the crowd that's arrived in celebration mode; the park wears Onam the way a Kerala home does, with warmth and a touch of grandeur.
The procession: Kerala's living heritage, all in one place
From August 26 to 30, every evening at 5:30, the park comes alive with a full traditional Onam procession, and it is a portrait of Kerala's cultural soul in motion. The muthukkuda held high. The thunder of the chenda melam. Mahabali and Vamanan walking among the crowd, retelling the legend at the heart of the festival. Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam in full costume. Kalaripayattu, the mother of martial arts, performed live. The Pulikali tigers prowling with their shikari in tow, straight from Kerala's most beloved street tradition. Kathakali and Theyyam in their magnificent forms, and the Garudan alongside; art forms that families travel across the state to witness, gathered in one evening. And leading the cheer, our very own Chikku and family.
For the little ones, it's often a first meeting with these art forms. For the elders, it's memory. That's what a festival is supposed to do.
Music, magic and the festive rhythm of the day
Through the season, the celebration runs from morning to night. Street magic keeps the park buzzing from 11 am to 2 pm; catch it as you move between rides. By 4 pm, the DJ takes over the Wave Pool for the most high-energy 45 minutes of the day; an entire pool moving to one beat is something you have to be in to believe. And as the evening procession winds down, the DJ at the Pavilion carries the celebration from 6:30 to 8, closing each day the way Onam days should close: with everyone still dancing.
The Onam only Wonderla can add
The morning belongs to home; the pookalam, the sadhya, the family around one table, as it always has. But Onam is a festival of abundance, and the day deserves a second act. The Wave Pool with your cousins. The thrill rides that turn a family gathering into a family story. Festive flavours at the food courts when the appetite returns (it always does). Grandparents watching Kathakali as the kids queue up for one more ride. One outing, every generation, nobody compromising.
Plan your Onam day
Festive season at the park: August 22 to 30; Flying Mahabali decor and street magic (11 am to 2 pm) all season
Wave Pool DJ: 4 to 4:45 pm daily through the season; Pavilion DJ: 6:30 to 8 pm

Come, be part of the welcome
Some festivals you watch. Onam, you belong to. This year, let the traditions begin at home and let the celebration find its second wind at Wonderla Kochi; where the chenda is louder, the tigers dance closer, and Maveli himself flies overhead. From all of us at Wonderla: Onaashamsakal.
